What you will experience
The tour starts in the afternoon when we gather inside Sugaman tours office and head with our air-conditioned mini van towards the nearby town called Omis. The beauty of Omis with its towering mountains and breathtaking shoreline is enhanced by the sight of Cetina river entering into the sea and its wild canyon stretching deep into hinterland.
Panoramic view of Cetina Canyon
On the first stop of our tour you will get the chance to experience and capture entire beauty of Cetina river canyon, city of Omis and entire panorama. As we enjoyed in the panoramic view of the region we will continue towards the starting point of our hiking tour, a small village called Truše.
Somorica and “the Lady of the Snow”
We will climb towards the mountain top which is approximately 400 meters above sea level. The majority of the hike we will be shaded by green forest which will certainly enhance the pleasure of the hike. Another factor which adds to the experience and value to the hike is the stunning panoramic view of Omis Riviera and the islands stretching as far as the eye can see.
As we reach the mountain top you will immediately notice an old church standing proudly on the mountain edge. This old Croatian church, dating back to 9th century, is named “The Lady of the Snow” for the unusual event witnessed by the locals when the snow started falling on the mountain in the middle of the summer (5th of August).
Around the church you will also notice old tombstones from the people who populated this area in 9th century.
As we enjoyed the spectacular view from the mountain top of the coastline and the islands on one side and of Dalmatian hinterland on the other it’s time to head back for the icing on the cake of our tour, a traditional Dalmatian dinner of the region.
Authentic Dalmatian Cuisine
We will dine inside the old stone house typical for the traditional Dalmatian taverns where the local chef will present you with the best of the authentic cuisine. Our tour includes dinner with three courses and a drink to your linking. The main course is famous “food under the bell” or “peka” as it is called locally, where food is placed inside the fireplace, covered with iron bell which is then covered with live coal.
Be warned though, once you try “peka” you will chase that taste for the rest of your life :). The other authentic meal on the menu is called Soparnik. Soparnik is traditional to this region and is given the EU Protection Status in 2016. It was also named intangible cultural heritage of Croatia by the Croatian ministry of culture.
Soparnik was made in this area many centuries ago (it is said to be the prototype of Italian pizza) and is simply a “must try” food as it merges the history with the present giving you the better taste of the region.
As we finish tasting all the authentic Dalmatian specialties we head back to Split ending our Hiking and Gourmet tour.
